SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is when bacteria from the large intestine travel to the small and overpopulate it. As a result, there are more microbes in your small intestine than there should be that release toxins and trigger gut inflammation.
SIBO then impacts the stomach by causing gas, bloating, abdominal pain, heartburn, diarrhea & other discomfort after eating due to the microbes fermenting carbohydrates in your gut. SIBO can also interfere with your absorption of nutrients. You may exhale some of this gas through your lungs, which is why doctors measure SIBO through breath testing.
Often this will clear up with diet tweaks/probiotics/digestive enzymes and parasite cleansing. The ileocecal valve controls the movement of materials between your small & large intestine. Sometimes this valve malfunctions. Parasites are a common culprit because they like to hang out in this part of the gut and can physically block the valve and keep it from closing. In these cases, all the probiotics in the world can't help until parasites are addressed. 😬
Diet, medication and health disorders can increase your SIBO risk.
➡️ Diets high in sugar & carbs promote SIBO.
➡️ Antibiotics, antacids & other heartburn medication increase SIBO risk.
➡️ Diseases that impact the digestive tract can also increase your propensity of getting SIBO. This includes thyroid disorders, cirrhosis, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease and diabetes.
Low FODMAP diets are helpful for folks with SIBO. FODMAPS (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) are sugars found in foods like fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans and polyols. They’re not completely absorbed by the human body & are easily fermented by gut bacteria which can cause significant gastrointestinal problems. The goal through detox & the low FODMAP diet is that you will allow your body to heal... and then you can slowly begin to incorporate the FODMAPS back in without the digestive discomfort. 💪
